Account policy

From Research Computing

Research computing follows account maintenance and backup policies of the CUNY Graduate Center (http://inside.gc.cuny.edu/informationresources/gcir_policies.htm) where applicable; more information on these policies is available at the Information Resources web site (http://inside.gc.cuny.edu/informationresources/default.htm). Accounts unused for a period of one year may be retired.

We do not have the facilities to assign general purpose UNIX or LINUX accounts as an alternative to the assigned Graduate Center and CUNY campus accounts. Research computing's email configuration is restricted by design to email notifications related to distributed resource management (e.g., end of job notifications) and system administration notices. While you can send mail out of the Linux systems (except for internal nodes), you can't receive mail from the outside (neither can we). We do not run general Internet mail services on the computational clusters, and we do not assign email accounts on them for receiving email. The Graduate Center's client services group assigns email accounts.

Cluster users must submit jobs to the cluster execution hosts. Cluster users should not run programs on the job submission hosts, monad.gc.cuny.edu or neptune.gc.edu.edu. Jobs found executing on the job submission hosts may be terminated. Cluster users are assigned to the Sun Grid Engine access control list (ACL) research or to the students ACL as appropriate. It is possible to be on both lists, but in that case care should be exercised so that jobs execute on the intended cluster.

Research Cluster

The research cluster is intended for faculty and faculty sponsored researchers who require access to parallel batch processing facilities. Use of the cluster is authorized solely for computational projects, the development of programs intended for execution on the cluster and work related to such development; no other use of the cluster, such as using it for archival storage, is permitted. Researchers affiliated with the CUNY Graduate Center and their students who wish to use the research cluster (monad.gc.cuny.edu) should email Dr. Florian Lengyel (mailto:flengyel@gc.cuny.edu), Assistant Director for Research Computing.

Instructional Cluster

Instructors who wish to use the instructional cluster for their classes should contact the Assistant Vice President for Information Technology before classes begin. The Information Tehnology web site documents policies regarding software acquisition and installation for classroom use. Once the use of the instructional cluster for classroom use is agreed upon, instructors should contact flengyel@gc.cuny.edu to have their student's accounts configured on the instructional cluster.
